ASA Hosts Soy101, Talks Modern Soybean Farming With Congressional Staff

Oct 02, 2014

Mid-Atlantic Soybean Association President Larry Breech and DuPont Young Leader alum Quint Pottinger joined dozens of House and Senate staff on Capitol Hill this week for Soy101, a series of briefings for congressional staff on the realities of modern soybean farming. Soy101 also detailed the links in the soybean supply chain and the various markets and products that soybeans are so integral in producing.

Kentucky farmer Quint Pottinger, center, speaks about the planting process during a Soy101 brief to House staff on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

Held Monday in the Senate and Tuesday in the House, the briefings gave congressional staff, many of whom have little or no agricultural background or who work for members in urban and suburban districts, the chance to ask questions and interact with farmers. The briefings are designed to follow the lifecycle of the soybean season to season, from pre-planting soil analysis following harvest, through to harvest the following fall, followed by marketing and transportation, and end uses.

Soy101 is presented by ASA with generous support from the United Soybean Board.
