Ice Leads to Early Closure of Upper Mississippi Shipping Season

Nov 20, 2014

Ice covered locks and dams near Minnesota are causing an early end to the shipping season on the upper Mississippi River today rather than early December. According to Reuters, this is the earliest closure on record.

The Reuters article states that there is an abundance of ice moving through the system and the Army Corps of Engineers is removing barges so they aren't stuck through the winter.
