Participants from the Vice-Ministry of Food Security and Nutrition learn about the value of soy at the ASA/WISHH Soy Nutrition Seminar in Guatemala City in September.

Last month in Guatemala, the American Soybean Association’s World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (ASA/WISHH) program hosted a soy nutrition seminar in collaboration with the Vice-Ministry of Food Security and Nutrition (VISAN), part of the Ministry of Agriculture. Close to 40 participants attended the seminar, the majority of who work on food distribution programs through the Vice-Ministry.

Dr. Mark Messina, a renowned expert on soy nutrition, shared the health benefits of soy and the value of soy consumption to a healthy diet. To develop the seminar, ASA/WISHH also collaborated with a local food processing company that imports over 4,500 MT of U.S. soy flour per year to produce a variety of soy-based products including both foods and drinks. This company provided a variety of soy products for tasting and participants learned how to incorporate soy products into local foods during a hands-on cooking portion of the seminar. ASA/WISHH continues to support the value of soy nutrition in Guatemala through technical assistance and hands-on training programs.
