ASA/WISHH Sends Global Soy Nutrition Expert to Guatemalan Nutrition Conference

Sep 15, 2016

Last month the American Soybean Association (ASA’s) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) sent internationally recognized soy health expert Mark Messina, PhD, to speak at the VIII Annual Nutrition Congress for the Association of Nutritionists of Guatemala. Messina’s presentation, supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Market Access Program (MAP) program, formed part of WISHH’s efforts in the region to provide scientific information as well as practical training about the health benefits of soy in foods.

Approximately 200 nutritionists and students attended Messina’s presentation and now understand more about the health benefits of soy. The attendees also learned about myths and facts surrounding soy consumption. There is a clear recognition among Guatemalan dietitians that soy foods offer a number of health advantages, although the general knowledge of soy foods is relatively low. WISHH will continue to work to educate nutritionists and dieticians in the country. Foods containing U.S. soy are widely available in Guatemala and include: soy milks, fortified drinks, ready to eat foods, tofu, and textured soy protein.
