Congress Works on Extension for Positive Train Control

Oct 08, 2015

The American Soybean Association (ASA) has joined with agricultural industry groups and a broader coalition of business and industry in urging Congress to act quickly to extend the deadline for railroads to implement Positive Train Control (PTC).  The extension is needed to avoid a disruption in rail service at the end of the year.

House and Senate transportation committee staff have indicated they are working together to craft an extension that can be supported and passed by both chambers in the coming weeks. The final product will most likely be a combination of the stand-alone extension bill introduced in the House (H.R. 3651) and the PTC language that was included in the Senate passed Highway Bill.

The railroad companies have warned that if an extension is not enacted, shipments of many commodities would cease and potentially all rail service could be impacted.
