ASA Joins Research Supporters in Thanking Ag Appropriators

Feb 06, 2014

ASA, as a founding member of Supporters of Agricultural Research (SoAR), wrote to Congressional appropriators this week to thank them for their support in the recently-passed FY 2014 Consolidated Appropriations Act.

The letters, written to House Ag Appropriations Chairman Robert Aderholt (R-AL) and Sam Farr (D-CA) and Senate Ag Appropriations Chairman Mark Pryor (D-AR) and Roy Blunt (R-MO), reference the additional investment in agricultural research during this time of budgetary constraint. “Although dollars invested today may take years to reap tangible rewards, agricultural research is vital to the advancement of our nation.”

In the new law, funding for the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) was increased from $277 million to $316.4 million. There are 15 founding members of SoAR, with ASA the only farm group. Other members include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and the Consumer Federation of America.
