Leadership At Its Best (LAIB) 

The Leadership At Its Best (LAIB) program, sponsored by Syngenta, prepares soybean leaders with advanced leadership development and high-impact communication skills needed to represent agriculture at the national level. Participants gain the tools and confidence to become effective advocates, helping strengthen a unified voice for U.S. soybean farmers in Washington, D.C. 

Who Should Participate 

LAIB is designed for: 

  • Current directors of state soybean associations  
  • Committee chairs within state soybean organizations  
  • Individuals with a strong desire to advance into top leadership roles  

What You’ll Gain 

Participants will: 

  • Strengthen leadership and decision-making skills  
  • Build confidence in public speaking and media engagement  
  • Gain a deeper understanding of agricultural policy issues  
  • Develop the ability to effectively advocate on behalf of farmers  
  • Build a strong network of soybean leaders from across the country  

Program Experience 

The program includes: 

  • Interactive leadership and professional development training  
  • Communications and media training  
  • In-depth discussions on key agricultural issues  
  • A hands-on advocacy experience, including meetings with legislators on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.  

Through its partnership with American Soybean Association, Syngenta leads training sessions that prepare participants to confidently engage with policymakers, media, and industry stakeholders. 

How to Get Involved 

Participation in LAIB is by nomination through your state soybean association. 

To be considered: 

  1. Contact your state soybean association  
  2. Express your interest in the program  
  3. Complete your state’s nomination/selection process  

Each year, a small cohort of approximately eight soybean farmer-leaders are selected from across the country. States may rotate participation annually to expand leadership opportunities. 

Program Impact 

Since its inception in 1991, more than 400 ASA members have completed the Leadership At Its Best program, many of whom have gone on to serve in influential leadership roles within agriculture.
