Committee Deal Reached on Moving Trade Promotion Authority Forward

Apr 16, 2015

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch and ranking Democrat Ron Wyden reached a deal on the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) and introduced bipartisan legislation bill on Thursday. The introduction and passage of TPA is the next step towards getting the best possible deal for Agriculture in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations which are nearly complete.

On Thursday the Administration kept up pressure on Congress to pass a TPA bill, with three cabinet members – Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman – appearing before the Senate Finance Committee on the importance of passing TPA. Additionally, ASA along with fellow agricultural groups who support TPA met with United States Trade Representative (USTR) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials to coordinate on a strategy for moving TPA through Congress.
