A new Corteva-sponsored global food security report reinforces the importance of WISHH’s work to connect trade and development. On Feb. 23, the Economist Intelligence Unit released its ninth annual Global Food Security Index, which measures the underlying drivers of food security in 113 countries, based on the factors of affordability, availability, quality and safety and natural resources and resilience.

According to the authors, the report underscores the food security shock caused by the pandemic and climate change impacts. Globally, there was a slight improvement in availability of food. However, overall scores deteriorated in affordability, quality and safety, as well as natural resources and resilience. In 2020, 62 out of 113 countries experienced a decline in the affordability of their food supplies.

From Africa to Asia to Latin America, WISHH’s work in trade and development is working to make market systems more resilient so that protein- rich foods and feeds are widely available and affordable. WISHH’s work in aquaculture, including soy-based feeds, is also an example of how WISHH contributes to meeting the challenge of feeding the world while still protecting the environment.
