The American Soybean Association (ASA), the Coalition for Safe Affordable Food (CFSAF) and more than 40 other national ag groups recently sent a letter to Congress requesting them to pass a uniform, national labeling standard for foods made with genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
This proposal comes at a time when agricultural groups are urging the House and Senate leaders to include a preemption of state labeling laws in the omnibus appropriations bill which will be voted on very soon. The House previously created a uniform, national labeling standard; however, both chambers of Congress voted against the mandatory GMO labeling proposal.
“It is imperative that Congress take action now to prevent a costly and confusing patchwork of state labeling laws from taking effect next year and spreading across the country. Congress must include language in the Omnibus Appropriations bill to ensure that food companies, farmers, ranchers, and consumers won’t face the significant increased costs of state GMO labeling laws,” the letter stated.
American families are in jeopardy of facing increased grocery prices and more confusing food labels come next July when Vermont’s labeling mandate goes into effect unless congressional action is not taken.
