As Expected, New Record Set on 2012 Indemnities

Apr 25, 2013

Federal crop insurance indemnities paid to farmers for last year’s losses have risen to a record $17 billion for the 2012 crop year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced. Indemnities for 2012, largely the result of the severe drought in the Plains and Midwest, are now $16.99 billion.

The previous record of $10.8 billion paid in indemnities was set in 2011. The 2012 number is not unexpected: the Congressional Budget Office had previously forecast $16 billion in expected indemnities.
