ASA Asks to Extend Comment Period on Partially Hydrogenated Oils

Dec 12, 2013

ASA sent a letter on Wednesday, asking the Food and Drug Administration to extend the comment period on partially hydrogenated oils.

“Soybean oil is the leading oil used in U.S. food products. Our industry has made great progress in removing trans fats from Americans’ diets. We are committed to building on that progress,” ASA stated in the letter. “A decision to remove GRAS status for partially hydrogenated oil will have a broad impact, not only for soybean farmers but also on soybean crushing facilities and food manufacturers.”

The letter requested a 60 day extension to the comment period due to the number of holidays that fall during the set comment timeline and the need to consult industry partners to provide a full perspective for the FDA.
