ASA leaders and staff last week attended the National Oilseed Processors Association (NOPA) 2014 annual meeting. At the meeting oilseed processors, national and state soybean grower organizations, and national sunflower as well as canola grower organizations took aim at the key issues affecting the U.S. oilseed industry. Round-table discussions and expert speakers focused on the global economic outlook, our poultry and pork customer bases, biodiesel, and growing sustainability issues.
Additionally, China’s unpredictable and stalled biotech approval system and the risks/impacts this has on the commercialization of new corn and soybean traits also was a topic of discussion among attendees. The opportunities as well as challenges facing both grower groups and processors underscored the need for continued collaboration between our sectors to expand trade and ensure market access for our products; to build demand through meal and oil use; to ensure a competitive oilseed cropping and processing complex; and to meet customer demands for sustainable products.
