The American Soybean Association (ASA) board of directors donated funds to provide more than 6,200 meals to food insecure residents in the St. Louis area this week. The ASA donation was unplanned and prompted by ASA Minnesota Director Lawrence Sukalski following a presentation at the association's annual winter meeting from the St. Louis Area Foodbank on the intersection of agriculture and anti-hunger initiatives.
The donation totaled more than $1,500, and according to St. Louis Area Foodbank's Matt Dace, each dollar donated provides four meals to those in need. The St. Louis Area Foodbank is the local affiliate of Feeding America, and serves 26 counties in Missouri and Illinois. At the national level, Feeding America and ASA have joined to lead an effort of anti-hunger and agricultural groups to explore how these two segments of the food industry can better understand the other's needs and priorities.
