ASA Endorses Letter to President Raising Concerns Over Agriculture Market Access in TPP

Jul 31, 2014

Members of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade sent a letter to President Obama this week, stating concerns over agriculture market access in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations.

The members specifically expressed concern with the efforts of Japan and Canada to exempt numerous tariff lines from complete elimination in the United States, according to a news release from the Ways and Means Press Office.

In the letter, the members state the current position in negotiations is unacceptable and U.S. farmers and ranchers deserve the best deal possible.

“Specifically, Japan is seeking to exempt numerous tariff lines from complete elimination with the United States.  If accepted, this unprecedented and objectionable offer would significantly limit access for U.S. farmers and ranchers to the Japanese market, and most likely, to other TPP countries as well,” the letter states. “Furthermore, caving to Japan’s demands would set a damaging precedent, compromising the U.S. negotiating position with future TPP members.”

The members also said they are “troubled by Canada’s lack of ambition, which is threatening a robust outcome for U.S. farmers.”

The letter ended stating with members urging the President to hold Japan and Canada to the same high standards as other TPP partners or congressional support for the agreement will be jeopardized.
