The Coalition for U.S. Seafood Production (CUSP), in response to a request for comment from the aquaculture teams of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service and National Institute of Food and Agriculture, offered its suggestions for optimizing research that would create new opportunities in commercial aquaculture. ASA is a member of CUSP along with other organizations that represent fish and feed producers, technology and feed suppliers, researchers, retailers, restaurateurs and public aquaria.
“In the U.S., we are on the verge of acknowledging the benefits of expanding domestic seafood production. Creating jobs from working water fronts to the agricultural heartland; making safe, nutritious, sustainable domestic seafood available to U.S. consumers; complementing wild catch rebuilding efforts with farmed seafood; and reducing the trade deficit attributable to seafood are the driving factors,” wrote CUSP in the letter. “Now the recently issued National Ocean Policy Implementation Plan (NOP) and the Strategic Plan for Federal Aquaculture Research provide a backdrop for implementing policies that will allow the seafood industry to grow and that will support technological innovation.”
