ASA Secretary Ron Moore (IL) participated in a What’s New Session panel discussion at Commodity Classic to provide information to farmers and other agriculture industry representatives about the new Privacy and Security Principles for Farm Data.
This is a document that ASA developed in partnership with the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), the National Corn Growers Association, the National Association of Wheat Growers, and numerous other agriculture organizations and companies to serve as a guide for farmers and technology providers as to best practices to follow regarding farm data agreements.
The panel was moderated by Paul Schrimpf, Director of the PrecisionAg Institute and editor of CropLife and PrecisionAg magazines. In addition to Moore, other panelists included Mary Kay Thatcher, Senior Director of Congressional Relations with AFBF; Clint Raine, Manager of Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs with NCGA and David Schemm a Kansas farmer and Secretary-Treasurer of the National Association of Wheat Growers. Moore helped explain what growers need to keep in mind when entering into an agreement that allows a company or another third party to access or use their farm data. A few of the key issues addressed during the session related to data included portability, ownership, security, transparency and contract terms. To read the complete list of principles, click here.
