More than 300 farmers, industry suppliers, ag retailers, government agency officials and consultants attended the Big Data Workshop at Iowa State University on Monday.

ASA joined with the PrecisionAg Institute earlier this week for a Big Data Workshop at Iowa State University that attracted well over 300 farmers, industry suppliers, ag retailers, government agency officials and consultants. The workshop began with opening remarks from ASA President Ray Gaesser (IA) and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey.Gaesser provided an overview of the work ASA is doing with other agriculture organizations to establish standards to help ensure the privacy of a farmer’s data, and also commented with Secretary Northey on the potential data holds for improving farm productivity and sustainability.

Farmer and university experts in precision agriculture and data management gave presentations about the value of data, security and privacy concerns, standardization needs, data and sustainability, and best management practices to maximize the value of on farm data. ASA also had a display in a small tradeshow area associated with the workshop and Gaesser and ASA Ag Data Work Group Chair Ron Moore (IL) participated in media interviews at the event.  For more information on the workshop, contact Michelle Hummel in the ASA office at mhummel@soy.org.
