ASA Pushes TPP Strategy for Lame Duck

Sep 08, 2016

The American Soybean Association (ASA), along with a coalition of other ag group and pro-Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) industry leaders, met to discuss a strategy for voting on TPP in the Lame Duck session of Congress.

The time to pass TPP is now and engaging with Members of Congress  prior to the November election is vital. While the presidential nominees’ rhetoric on TPP remains critical, support for TPP from Members of Congress is growing.

With more than 95 percent of the world’s consumers living outside our borders, TPP will significantly expand the export of Made-in-America goods such as agricultural products that support American jobs. Not passing TPP this year will result in roughly $77 Billion in permanent loss to the U.S. It will also allow our top competitors the opportunity to complete their own trade agreements that leave the U.S. behind.

It is imperative that ASA members engage with members of their community and their elected officials to demonstrate the positive impact TPP will have on the soybean industry and to urge them to bring the issue up for a vote this year.
