ASA Supports CFTC Nominee Heath Tarbert

Mar 14, 2019

ASA and a coalition of ag stakeholders weighed in with the Senate this week to support the nomination of Dr. Heath Tarbert to be the next Chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Tarbert currently serves as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Markets.

The letter to Senate Ag Committee Chairman Roberts and Ranking Member Stabenow states, “While Dr. Tarbert’s background is primarily in the financial sector, he has demonstrated his commitment to learning the issues and challenges facing the agriculture sector and advocating on our behalf.  Additionally, in our meetings with him, it is clear that Dr. Tarbert has made the effort to learn about the agricultural markets and our use of futures and other derivatives products.  Dr. Tarbert has also stated his intent, if confirmed, to begin his tenure by sponsoring the CFTC’s Agricultural Advisory Committee, as well as having the CFTC continue to co-host its annual agricultural commodity futures conference.  Finally, and most importantly, he has committed to getting outside the Washington “beltway” to visit farms, ranches, and agricultural processing and storage facilities to learn from our members firsthand.” The full text of the letter is here.
