ASA Treasurer and Delaware farmer Richard Wilkins was invited to speak Wednesday at the Washington Post’s Feeding the Future forum, where agriculture experts and policy makers, including U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, came together to discuss the challenges of meeting the global demand for food.

By 2050, there will be nine billion people on the planet and the forum sponsored by Monsanto, focused on how we will we grow the food needed on the land we have using innovation and technology.

Wilkins was invited to speak by Washington Post Editor Mary Jordan, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who has written from 40 countries. Jordan interviewed Wilkins about his work on the farm, the technology he uses, conservation and food waste.

“With 60 percent of our soybean exported, I know I help feed the world,” Wilkins said during the forum, adding he believes in using diversity agriculture methods, including GMO and conventional.

Wilkins also touched on integrated pest management and the huge risks assumed by farmers each time they plant a crop and rely on weather, markets and other unknowns. He also discussed how he talked food waste on his farm by using consumer-undesirable lima beans as cattle feed.
