ASA’s WISHH Program Sends Consultant to El Salvador

Jun 06, 2013

Last month ASA’s World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) program sent Sergio Serna Saldivar to El Salvador to meet with millers, bakers and extruded snack producers. WISHH Program Manager for Latin America Liz Hare joined Serna in his meetings. The team met with a flour mill that processes 6,500 tons of wheat and 4,500 tons of corn per month to discuss the value of adding soy to their finished products. The company has requested soy flour samples and will be conducting trials with their products.

The team also met with an industrial manufacturer of snack foods that currently produces seven snack products and is looking to expand. Serna explained that the inclusion of soy flour in their products could increase the protein by up to 25 percent. This company and a large scale bakery have also requested soy flour samples and will be conducting trials with their products.
