Gast visits a Cambodian aquaculture farm during a pond harvest.
A North Dakota soybean grower traveled to Cambodia and Myanmar in mid-January to learn more about these two emerging markets and to meet with current and potential customers of U.S. soybeans.
Matt Gast, an American Soybean Association (ASA) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) committee member and North Dakota Soybean Council Board Member, traveled with ASA/WISHH Program’s Asia Regional Director Alan Poock. While in Cambodia, Gast visited an aquaculture hatchery, nursery and farm. He also visited a feed mill that currently purchases U.S. soybeans for extrusion to produce piglet starter feed and a feed retail store.
“Aquaculture is really taking off in Cambodia, and soy protein demand will grow with it,” Gast said. “An importer of U.S. beans is building a brand new fish feed plant in Phnom Penh!”
In Myanmar, Gast met with Rachel Nelson, who is the new Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) agricultural affairs officer. He also visited a tofu producer who is receiving food grade soybeans through the Quality Samples Program and company that purchased an Insta-Pro extruder to produce soybean oil.
