ASA/WISHH Program Concludes Tilapia Feeding Demonstrations in Pakistan

Jan 31, 2013

ASA’s World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) program recently completed tilapia feeding demonstrations at seven sites throughout Pakistan utilizing floating fish feed produced with U.S. soybean meal.

The demonstration was a strong success - the fish grew quickly and to a market size that was considerably larger than any tilapia that had been in the market place previously. Farmers recognized the critical advantages of the floating feed as they were better able to ascertain the health of their fish, carefully adjust feeding to the actual consumption rate of the fish, and achieve feed conversion ratios that were 100 to 200 percent improvements on the locally available non-floating feed with low soybean content.

The farmer with the most successful harvest participated in Kansas State University’s (KSU) Aquaculture Short Course in July 2012, where he learned skills vital to the improvement of his business. KSU is a partner with WISHH in the three-year FEEDing Pakistan program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
