Last week the American Soybean Association (ASA’s) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) program sent internationally recognized soy health expert Mark Messina, PhD, to speak at the 7th Annual Nutrition Conference for the Association of Guatemalan Nutritionists.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Messina’s presentation was part of WISHH’s efforts to provide scientific information, as well as practical training about the health benefits of soy in foods.

“Soyfoods offer valuable nutrition for men, women and children of all ages in Guatemala,” Messina said. “Soyfoods present an important opportunity to help Guatemalans respond to some of the nation’s leading health concerns, ranging from heart disease to diabetes and malnutrition.”

Foods containing soy are widely available in Guatemala. They include soy milks, fortified beverages, tofu and textured soy protein. WISHH partners with companies in the region to provide technical assistance on the development of new soy-based products and the inclusion of U.S. soy in existing product lines.
