The American Soybean Association’s World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (ASA/WISHH) program Executive Director Jim Hershey had meetings in Columbia, Mo. and Manhattan, Kans. this week talking to land grant university personnel involved in USAID-funded projects in Africa. The University of Missouri-Columbia is engaged in the Soy Innovations Laboratory which is doing research on soybean value chains in Africa.
A recent ASA/WISHH market assessment funded by USDA indicates there is more demand than supply for soy protein in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal. Kansas State University is the lead institution on a post-harvest handling innovation laboratory studying grain and oilseed supply chains in developing countries, including Ghana. ASA/WISHH is in a position to collaborate with these organizations and identify trade opportunities for U.S. soybean suppliers. Hershey also attended a Kansas Soybean Commission meeting in Topeka, Kans. to discuss soybean organization and land grant collaborations.
