Back the Farm Bill Campaign Gains Momentum in South Dakota

Aug 22, 2013

A broad coalition made up of South Dakota agriculture, energy, conservation and business groups, and the state’s largest network of food banks have unveiled “Back the Farm Bill”, a campaign aimed at raising awareness of the need for a comprehensive, five-year federal farm bill.

During a press conference as part of the Sioux Empire Fair’s Ag Appreciation Day on Aug. 7, leaders from a wide range of interests, each speaking on their organization’s support for the passage of a five-year farm bill before the current extension of the 2008 farm bill expires Sept. 30, 2013.

The coalition was founded on five key principals, which it announced at the conference. These principals were:

  1. The Farm Bill has to be compromise.
  2. Another extension is not a viable option.
  3. The Farm Bill must contain a nutrition title.
  4. Do not repeal permanent law.
  5. It is time for the House to name conferees.

During the “Back the Farm Bill” campaign, many of the groups will reach out to their members and the public to encourage their support of the legislation and to encourage them to contact members of Congress to urge their support. The campaign will culminate on Aug. 31, with a Back the Farm Bill Rally during the South Dakota State Fair.
