On July 16, a U.S. Department of Agriculture team consisting of Bangladesh industry and government officials applicable to soy-related issues visited the ASA office. Hosting the group was Alan F. Poock, Asia Program Manager for ASA’s World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) program, and from the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) Technical Issues Director Kim Nill, FTO contractor Tom Redick, and intern Elizabeth McLeod.

Presentations to the team and subsequent discussion covered environmental and economic benefits of biotech soybeans, regulatory aspects of biotech crops, the high nutritional quality of U.S.-origin soy and WISHH’s Asian program.

While in St. Louis, the team also visited Monsanto and the Danforth Center. The participants reported that Bangladesh will soon approve for planting there an insect-resistant brinjal (eggplant) that was developed in Bangladesh.
