Becoming a Part of the Solution to Reduce Hunger, Malnutrition Worldwide

Jun 19, 2014

The statistics are clear—the issue of malnutrition still needs to be addressed. With 165 million children suffering from stunted growth and 52 million with acute malnutrition, there’s more work to be done. Sabrina de Souza, Nutrition Advocacy Coordinator RESULTS UK, describes the issue well in her article titled “Ending Child Malnutrition: Never Before Have We Been So Forearmed.” Hunger

“…a lack of evidence and solutions are no longer viable excuses for inaction. We know how to prevent children from becoming malnourished and we know how to effectively treat children with the most severe form of acute malnutrition. We know that if we scaled up 10 life-saving interventions in the first 1000 days of life (from pregnancy to age two), we could reduce the number of stunted children by 33.5 million and reduce the rate of severe acute malnutrition by more than 60%.”  -Sabrina de Souza, Nutrition Advocacy Coordinator RESULTS UK

She makes the point that the task of reducing under nutrition is difficult as it crosscuts many sectors, making it “everyone’s problem and no one’s responsibility.”

But, what is important to note in her article, is that the world today has never been better equipped to address the issue of hunger and malnutrition. Piles of research and best practices, as well as a refreshed momentum for the movement against world hunger, create the perfect opportunity to make huge strides in these efforts.

The World Soy Foundation (WSF) is proud to be a part of that momentum in addressing hunger and malnutrition. By working in areas of community development, nutrition education and direct distribution of soy products to help improve protein deficient diets, the WSF is a part of the solution using the power of soy.
