Bipartisan Letter Calls for Strong RFS, Continued Biodiesel Growth

Dec 19, 2013

A group of 54 members of Congress sent a letter on Wednesday, urging lawmakers to increase the proposed Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) to continue biodiesel growth in the United States next year.

The bipartisan letter states biodiesel is on pace for a record production of 1.7 billion gallons in 2014—yet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed reducing biodiesel production to 1.28 billion gallons for 2014 and 2015.

“It is clear that biodiesel has been a great RFS success story. It has exceeded RFS targets in each year and is clearly poised to do so again in 2013,” the lawmakers wrote. “This type of reduction could have very damaging repercussions.  It could result in dozens of biodiesel facilities shutting down permanently and ceasing production.”

In the letter led by U.S. Reps. Tom Latham, R-Iowa and Mike McIntyre, D-N.C., the U.S. representatives – a bipartisan group representing districts from California to Iowa to Florida – urged the administration to establish an RFS volume that is at least consistent with this year’s anticipated production of 1.7 billion gallons.
