House and Senate leaders passed a budget bill two weeks ago containing more than $3 billion in cuts to the crop insurance program over 10 years. Following that cut, House and Senate Agriculture Committee leadership struck a gentlemen’s agreement with Congressional leadership to restore the money from those cuts in the omnibus spending bill. As you may know, Reps. Ron Kind and Jim Sensenbrenner, of Wisconsin, and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, of New Hampshire, have introduced legislation that would maintain those cuts.
To ensure that Congressional leadership honors their word and eliminates what are potentially disastrous cuts to the farm safety net, Rep. David Young, of Iowa, has introduced a stand-alone bill that will repeal the crop insurance provision. He has asked the industry to help get co-sponsors for this bill so we can have a show of force in support of fixing this problem in the upcoming Omnibus bill.
Over the next two days, please email your member of Congress and encourage him or her to co-sponsor Rep. Young’s bill. We have uploaded a prewritten email to congressional offices into the Soy Action Center here, or you may call the offices directly by looking up your district office numbers here.
Thank you for your work on this effort, and we’ll keep you abreast of any developments as they come our way.
