Committee Deal Reached on Moving Trade Promotion Authority Forward

Apr 16, 2015

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch and ranking Democrat Ron Wyden have reportedly reached a deal on the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill itself, including the mechanism for taking away “fast track” legislative protections from a trade agreement. However, introduction of the bill is still stalled due to controversy over the renewal of the Trade Adjustment Assistance program.

Despite the bill not formally being introduced, three cabinet members – Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and US Trade Representative Michael Froman – will appear before the Senate Finance Committee on Thursday to testify on TPA. This news is a positive step forward for TPA and getting a bill passed in the Senate.
