Both the House and Senate are organizing letters to Robert Lighthizer, the United States Trade Representative (USTR), urging him to prioritize the interest of the American agricultural industry during the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) renegotiation process. The House letter is led by Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Lloyd Smucker (R-PA) and the Senate letter is led by Sens. Pat Roberts (R-KS) and John Thune (R- SD).
Please access the Soy Action Center and urge your representatives to sign on to their respective letters. It’s critical for the USTR to receive a clear bipartisan message from Congress on the importance of preserving the advantages U.S. agriculture has seen under NAFTA.
The letters, attached, highlight the significant gains for the agriculture industry under NAFTA, namely quadrupling U.S. ag exports to Canada between 1993 and 205, and emphasizes that renegotiations must preserve the economic increases NAFTA has seen over the years.
The Senate sign on deadline is COB Friday, June 23 and the House sign on deadline is COB Wednesday, June 28. Again, you can access the Soy Action Center here to urge your representatives to sign on to these important letters.
