Cover Crops Working Group to Publish Recommendations for Expanding, Soil Health

Jun 17, 2015

The National Working Group on Cover Crops and Soil Health will publish recommendations this week that offer action items for expanding cover crop acreage and additional improvements to soil health.

American Soybean Association (ASA) Chairman Ray Gaesser is one of the 18 Working Group members. The 10 action items all pertain to USDA agencies and programs and cover a range of policies from research to crop insurance to conservation programs. Among the recommendations are creation of grant programs within existing USDA research programs to fund regional research and education efforts on cover crops; partnerships to develop improved cover crop germplasm; a triple-strategy conservation approach for fields coming out of CRP; and decoupling cover crop terminations from Federal crop insurance eligibility. The report will be published on the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) website by next week.
