The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Dow AgroSciences Enlist Duo herbicide for use in additional states this week.
America’s soybean farmers welcome the announcement, as the problem of weed resistance spreads across the soybean growing regions of the U.S. This solution presents another integral mode of action with which farmers can fight yield-robbing weeds.
The newly approved nine states include Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma and North Dakota. ASA supported the addition of these states in written comments to EPA in December 2014.
“We continue to believe that soybean farmers in all states need access to Enlist Duo and other new products in order to effectively prevent and manage weed resistance,” ASA stated, “As we have previously commented to EPA, the most important lesson learned from the repeated observations of weeds, or other pests, developing resistance to control measures is this: to maintain effective control, a farmer must continuously vary weed and/or pest control tools, including multiple modes of action.”
The first six states - Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin - were included on the federal label when the EPA registered Enlist Duo for use with Enlist soybeans and corn in October 2014. Dow will continue to work closely with state regulatory authorities to obtain local approvals.
