The new Alltech Global Feed Survey finds feed production grew 1% globally in 2020 despite COVID-19 impacts. Aquaculture feed realized the strongest of any primary protein species with a 3% increase over 2019, according to the Alltech data. Yet, the survey also reflects the challenges that WISHH must overcome in leading long-term market development strategies for U.S. soy that support developing country entrepreneurs.

From Nigeria to Cambodia, WISHH is working with strategic partners to build the markets for protein-based feeds. Alltech’s survey estimates that the total Nigerian aquaculture feed production is currently only 772,000 metric tons.

“WISHH starts from scratch to build new markets for our soybeans,” said South Dakota soybean grower Craig Converse, who serves on the WISHH Committee and made a 2019 trip to see WISHH’s Commercialization of Aquaculture for Sustainability Trade (CAST) - Cambodia project.

“It’s far more complicated than just going to find a buyer in a country,” Converse said. “WISHH has to do everything from in-country market assessments to education on the importance of protein in human and animal diets to how to mix proper feed rations with soybeans rather than kitchen scraps.

He added that it’s a long-term process, but WISHH is well positioned for more success.

The Alltech survey is designed to act as barometer for the state of animal feed production worldwide. It comprises global data, collected from more than 140 countries and more than 28,000 feed mills. Alltech’s country-by-country interactive map is available here.
