The House Energy and Commerce Committee's Energy and Power Subcommittee held a hearing on June 22 titled, "The Renewable Fuel Standard - Implementation Issues." Among those testifying at the hearing was National Biodiesel Board (NBB) Vice President of Federal Affairs Anne Steckel. In her testimony, Steckel said that biodiesel is delivering the vast majority of Advanced Biofuel under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and is poised for continued growth with strong policy.
“If you take away one thing from my testimony today, I hope it is the following – while there are certainly areas that could be improved, the RFS has made tremendous progress in developing Advanced Biofuels and delivering them to American consumers,” Steckel said. “Biodiesel and renewable diesel have made up the vast majority of Advanced Biofuels in the RFS, including filling more than 90 percent of the category in the last two years.”
The American Soybean Association (ASA) is actively supporting NBB and the biodiesel industry’s efforts to strengthen the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recently announced RFS proposal. The ASA is submitting comments to EPA advocating that the volumes for biomass-based diesel be increased to 2.5 billion gallons for 2018 instead of the 2.1 billion gallons in the Proposed Rule.
