House Rejects Amendment to Allow Truck Weight Increases on Federal Interstates

Nov 05, 2015

During consideration of the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act (the Highway Bill) on Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 187-236 to defeat an amendment offered by Rep. Reid Ribble (R-WI) to provide states the option to increase truck weight limits on federal interstates.

This is a disappointing outcome for the American Soybean Association (ASA) and soybean farmers, and a missed opportunity for Congress to improve transportation efficiency and the competitiveness of U.S. farmers and businesses. You can view the Roll Call vote and how each Member of the House voted here.

The ASA and the Soy Transportation Coalition (STC) worked closely over the past two years with other organizations and industries as part of a coalition to support this effort. The coalition dedicated significant time and resources compiling studies and data to support our position and refute the myths and false concerns raised by the safety groups and railroad companies that opposed the higher truck weights. While we are extremely disappointed in the outcome, ASA commends Rep. Ribble (R-WI) and his staff for their relentless efforts on this issue, especially given the considerable opposition that existed. ASA appreciates all of the members and state association staff that contacted Members of Congress in support of the Ribble amendment.

The House is expected to conclude consideration and pass the Highway Bill on Thursday. The bill then proceeds to a Conference Committee with the Senate, which passed their version of the Surface Transportation Reauthorization in July.
