Dr. Zach Liu visits the Yang Li tofu plant in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Northern Crops Institute (NCI) Food Scientist Dr. Zach Liu spent the past two weeks working with eight soymilk and tofu companies in Myanmar and Cambodia on the benefits of using U.S. food grade soybeans.
Through a competitive bidding process, three U.S. exporters provided seven soybean varieties that were shipped in February through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded Quality Samples Program. Interest in U.S. food grade soybeans is growing in both countries due to the poor quality and limited production of locally grown soybeans. Consumers are also looking for higher-quality food products for their families.
The soybean samples were used for testing and to conduct full-scale production trials. Feedback will be shared with the three U.S. exporters on their respective soybean varieties.
The North Dakota Soybean Council funded Liu’s trip, along with the container custom clearance and in-country distribution costs.
