Legislation introduced by Reps. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) and G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.) is gaining momentum in the House as it attracts additional co-sponsors from diverse districts around the country. The Pompeo-Butterfield bill is a key priority for the American Soybean Association (ASA) in the 114th Congress, as it would set a voluntary national framework for the labeling of foods containing GMOs.
Most importantly, the bill would establish a single, national non-GMO label overseen by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, which would give consumers the information they want without unnecessarily demonizing modern agricultural technology.
ASA and fellow members of the Coalition for Safe, Affordable Food met this week with prospective co-sponsors, even as more lawmakers signed on to the bill. Currently, there are 28 co-sponsors of the bill, including 19 Republicans and nine Democrats. ASA urges all members to continue reaching out to their representatives to encourage co-sponsorship.
