Feed millers in the West African country of Ghana have improved the quality of their feeds, thanks to the American Soybean Association’s World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (ASA/WISHH) U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-funded AMPLIFIES Ghana Project.

Feed experts from AMPLIFIES partner Kansas State University have trained feed millers like Alfred Okyere, who operates a toll mill that manufacturers feed for hundreds of poultry farmers.

After assessing his production capacity and conducting feed uniformity tests, AMPLIFIES Ghana was able to show Okyere that the mill’s improperly mixed poultry rations were curbing growth rates in his customers’ flocks, as well as increasing the mill’s electricity costs.

To address the problem, AMPLIFIES advised Okyere to change his worn feed mixer augers and make other adjustments He followed the recommendations, resulting in immediate feed uniformity improvements while reducing manufacturing times and electricity costs. Poultry farmers are now testifying that they see the benefits to their flocks and are recommending Okyere’s feeds to other farmers.

Grateful to the AMPLIFIES project, Okyere is determined to continue to implement project recommendations to further improve his business prospects. Importantly, his customers will also continue to benefit from higher-quality poultry feeds, creating demand for improved livestock feeds that can be manufactured with U.S. soy.
