Senate Bill to Improve U.S. Port Operations Gets Hearing

Jun 25, 2015

A Senate hearing is being held on June 25 for a  bill introduced to address the disruption experienced earlier this year at the West Coast ports due to a labor dispute and negotiations on a new contract between the union and the Pacific Maritime Administration.

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee scheduled a hearing and markup of the Port Transparency Act (S. 1298).

The American Soybean Association (ASA) supports the bill, which is intended as a step toward improving visibility into how U.S. ports are operating by establishing a data-based port performance measurement and reporting program that will enable the responsible federal agencies to prepare meaningful annual reports on the performance and capacity of the nation’s key ports. Analysis of port performance data would help ensure the nation’s commerce continues to flow efficiently.

ASA recently signed on to a letter supporting S. 1298 with a broad coalition of groups representing manufacturers, farmers, agribusinesses, wholesalers, retailers, importers, exporters, distributors, transportation and logistics providers and other supply chain stakeholders. A copy of that letter can be viewed here.
