ASA joined other members of the Ag Biotech Alliance in an April 8 letter responding to a request for comment from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on modernizing its regulations for reviewing crops with new biotech traits. The letter pointed out that EPA has recently expanded its oversight of certain biotech traits that are not intended to control pests, and which are properly subject to review by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It also noted that state regulatory agencies currently require registrants to submit the same information they provide to EPA, and that this redundancy could be eliminated if EPA implements its E-Portal pilot program. These comments are intended to encourage EPA to make its regulatory system more predictable, risk-proportionate, flexible and outcome-oriented.
