Soy Growers Encouraged to Contact Senate Offices on the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act

Oct 08, 2015

The next two months will require an all-hands-on-deck effort from everyone within agricultural organizations to pass the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act.

The bill will establish a voluntary food labeling standard for products that do not contain ingredients derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs).  It will also prevent individual states from establishing confusing and costly labeling laws for biotech food products. While a similar bill has not yet been introduced in the Senate, Sen. Hoeven from North Dakota has committed to championing the bill in the coming weeks.

What the Senator needs right now is to hear from fellow Republicans that also support farmers’ abilities to use safe technologies to meet consumer demand with a smaller environmental impact.  Second, he needs his Democratic colleagues to also show support for the bill, as bipartisanship will be key to the bill’s success. This grassroots support over the next two months will be a key factor in the eventual success of the bill, so please email early and often!
