Last week, the Senate Commerce Committee held a field hearing on rail shipper issues in Sioux Falls, S.D. that focused on implementation of the Surface Transportation Board (STB) reform and reauthorization bill.
Testifying at the hearing were the STB Board Members, representatives of the Fertilizer Institute and the South Dakota Corn Growers Association and representatives from the electric and ethanol industries.
Sen. John Thune (R-SD), Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee led the hearing and questioned panel members on the rail rate dispute case process. STB Chairman Dan Elliot provided an update on the implementation of the STB reauthorization bill and announced that hearings would be held and comments solicited on improvements to the rate case process.
As soybeans are a significant utilizer of rail service, the American Soybean Association (ASA) will continue to monitor the regulatory actions and progress of the STB.
