Soy growers are urging a swift confirmation for U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) nominee Robert Lighthizer to keep U.S. trade moving forward.
The American Soybean Association (ASA) and other groups signed a letter to Congress late last week, stating quick action is vital to “putting in place a U.S. government team that can robustly engage in trade negotiations to further enhance U.S. economic growth and job creation.”
In the letter, the groups emphasized the central role USTR plays in the development and coordination of U.S. international trade policy, and how important it is for the country to have a full team in the field, as major agreements like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) are reviewed.
“To ensure U.S. trade policy puts all Americans first, including U.S. food and agriculture producers, we believe it is of utmost importance to confirm the USTR as soon as possible,” the groups state in the letter. “We look forward to working with Mr. Lighthizer and other Trump Administration officials on efforts to develop and implement a U.S. trade policy that continues to promote America’s food and agriculture producers and exporters.”
