As the Senate continues to work on the farm bill, Sens. Angus King (I-ME) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) are circulating a Dear Colleague letter asking the Senate Agriculture Committee’s leaders to support and increase the funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) export programs, including the Foreign Market Development Program (FMD). This week, soy growers urged their senators to sign the King-Cantwell letter by Thursday, June 21.
Why?
With the Senate planning to consider the farm bill next week, the Senators expect to send the letter today.
About MAP and FMD:
MAP and FMD are vital to soybean farmers as they provide opportunities to develop or grow demand for U.S. products in foreign markets, increase U.S. exports and protect American competitiveness. Since 2002 the FMD and MAP programs have assisted in raising U.S. export market share by 1.3 percent which resulted in an additional $6.1 billion in agricultural exports.
