TPA Fails in Senate

May 12, 2015

The Senate failed in its attempt to invoke cloture and proceed to voting today on the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act, which would have granted Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) to the White House.

This means that, barring a last minute compromise today, the bill will not come to the floor for a vote this week. Extension of TPA is a critical priority for ASA in the 114th Congress, and in the coming days, ASA will reach out to farmers with a coordinated effort to contact Senate offices and urge forward progress on the issue. While today is certainly a setback for the effort to pass TPA and puts yet another barrier to finalization of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), it is hardly the end of the matter, and we will need added efforts from each ASA farmer member--especially in states with Democratic Senators--to build support for TPA.
