The International Longshore Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have reached a tentative six-year contract to avoid disruptions of Gulf and East Coast port operations.
The new deal was reached nearly three months before the current contract expires on Sept. 30, 2018. The agreement is still subject to ratification by both parties and the specifics have not been released.
The American Soybean Association (ASA) has followed this issue, as contract extensions provide supply chain stakeholders with the certainty they need to run their operations.
The 2015 dispute during negotiations threatened supply chain continuity for soy growers and countless other U.S. agricultural commodities, causing extreme congestion, delays and uncertainty, in addition to costing the agriculture industry millions of dollars for every week that the negotiations lasted.
