Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) posted 30 questions on their website asking for input on a variety of issues related to the biotech labeling law, which requires disclosure of food with bioengineered ingredients. Questions cover a variety of topics, including what triggers mandatory disclosure, how to measure compliance and what the on-the-package symbol will look like. USDA has asked for input by July 17, and the American Soybean Association (ASA) is working with other organizations in the Coalition for Safe Affordable Food to draft responses.
The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Law, which was signed into law on July 29, 2016, requires USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service to finalize a rule to implement the law by July 2018. USDA is expected to use input received from the questions to propose an initial draft of the rule this fall, which will be subject to public comment and revisions before it is finalized.
More information on the questions can be found here.
